Punkva Caves

The Punkva Caves are an underground system with passages containing stalactites and stalagmites alongside the Punkva River flowing through limestone formations. The network spans several kilometers and connects various chambers together.

The cave system was systematically explored and mapped by Professor Absolon and his team in the early 1900s. These early investigations established the foundation for understanding this underground network.

The cave system takes its name from the Punkva River that carved through the limestone and continues to shape the chambers today. Visitors can observe how flowing water remains central to the character of this underground world.

Visitors can join guided tours that combine walking sections with boat rides on the underground river. It is advisable to reserve spots in advance during busy periods.

The system is part of a much larger underground network that stretches for dozens of kilometers. This vast expanse makes it one of the most extensive cave systems in the region.
