Lichnice Castle, Castle ruin in Třemošnice, Czech Republic.
Lichnice Castle is a ruin located on a hillside near Třemošnice in the Iron Mountains region. The site features stone walls arranged in a triangular layout with two residential towers remaining from the medieval period.
The castle was built around 1250 as a royal stronghold and served as an important fortress in Bohemia for centuries. It weathered the Hussite Wars in the early 1400s when it became a contested site between different military forces.
The castle foundations led to the establishment of the von Lichtenburg noble family, marking its role in medieval Czech aristocratic development.
The ruin is reached by walking along a marked trail that climbs from Třemošnice upward toward the hilltop. The ascent is steep, but visitors are rewarded with views across the surrounding countryside.
One distinctive aspect is how the castle sits on an isolated height that makes it visible from considerable distances across the region. The fieldstone walls were built without mortar and show varying states of preservation depending on their original purpose.
