Kaňkovy hory, Nature reserve in Seč, Czech Republic.
Kaňkovy hory is a protected nature reserve that spans the main ridge of the Železné hory mountains, featuring steep rock cliffs and an elevation of about 557 meters above sea level. The terrain encompasses dense beech forests that dominate the vegetation across the site.
The area was protected as a nature reserve by the Czech Ministry of Culture in 1955 to preserve its landscape and diverse wildlife. In 2016, the reserve was reorganized into multiple separate conservation areas to allow for more targeted protection measures.
The place is known for its diverse bird populations that visitors can observe while walking through dense beech forests. Cavity-nesting species like stock doves and collared flycatchers have found an important habitat here.
The reserve is accessible through a well-marked trail system, with a red path following the ridge and green paths connecting nearby villages. Visitors should wear suitable footwear and bring weather-appropriate clothing, as the terrain is hilly and conditions can change quickly.
The site rests on geological foundations of ancient crystalline rocks, particularly gneisses and migmatites, which form distinctive rock formations. These special stone layers shape the landscape and create unique habitats for specialized plant and animal species.
