Rýzmburk, Castle ruin in Žernov, Czech Republic
Rýzmburk is a castle ruin standing on the left bank of the Aupa River in the Babiččino údolí region of Eastern Bohemia. The stone remains show traces of medieval fortress architecture, with foundations and fragments still visible among the hillside landscape.
It was first documented in 1319 as part of a defensive network protecting the eastern border. The fortress changed hands among several noble families until it was seized in the early 1600s and gradually abandoned.
The name reflects its medieval past and the place was shaped by different noble families over centuries. Visitors can experience the ruins as a quiet reminder of this history of control and power.
The site is open to visitors throughout the year and sits within a natural river valley landscape ideal for walking. Wear sturdy footwear as the terrain is uneven and paths may be overgrown or unpaved in places.
Stone from the ruined fortress was later reused in building the nearby Ratibořice Castle. This shows how medieval ruins often became quarries, with their material passing into new structures rather than being lost.
