Rudrův mlýn, Watermill in Ratibořice, Czech Republic
Rudrův mlýn is a watermill in Ratibořice built with traditional stone construction across two floors, housing original milling machinery and equipment throughout its spaces. The building displays the mechanical systems and tools that were used to grind grain during its working years.
The mill originated in the 18th century and took its name when miller Antonín Rudr acquired it through marriage, operating it until 1842. Local authorities later purchased the property and added a water-powered pressing building constructed in Empire style.
The mill holds significance in Czech literature as the setting for scenes in Božena Němcová's novel 'Babička', where readers encounter the miller and his surroundings. Visitors can walk through the same rooms that appear in this beloved story.
The mill is open to visitors from April through October, with extended daytime hours during the warmer months. Wear comfortable shoes since the interior includes traditional stairs and uneven floor surfaces from its working era.
The site preserves a separate water-powered building used for pressing and smoothing heavy linens and fabrics, a secondary operation alongside milling. This adjoining structure reveals how water power served multiple craft purposes in rural communities.
