Chartreuse de Prague, Carthusian monastery in Smíchov, Czech Republic
Chartreuse of Prague was a Carthusian monastery in Smíchov situated along the Vltava River, featuring farmland, orchards, gardens, and five mills across its territory. The complex occupied land on the left bank of the river and shaped the local landscape for centuries.
The monastery was destroyed in 1419 during the Hussite Wars and was never rebuilt after its destruction. The community had existed for less than 80 years since its establishment in the mid-14th century.
The monastery developed strong connections with Charles University in Prague, contributing to intellectual exchange through its monks and manuscript collection.
The former site is located along Kartouzská Street in the Smíchov district, where traces of the old layout remain visible. Manuscripts that once belonged to the monastery are now housed in Vienna and can be viewed there.
The monastery met its end in 1419 during the Hussite Wars and remained unrestored, marking the conclusion of its 77-year presence.
