Komerční banka Smíchov, Brutalist bank building in Smíchov, Czech Republic.
Komerční banka Smíchov is a bank building with an unusual form: a truncated octagonal pyramid structure across two floors. The facade features raw concrete surfaces with geometric patterns that structure the entire exterior throughout.
Karel Prager designed this building in 1977 as a banking facility for the Czechoslovak State Bank, with construction finishing in 1992. The structure served as a branch until closure in 2022.
The building shows how banks in the late Soviet era used architecture to express stability and modernity through concrete forms. The raw surfaces and geometric design were a statement about forward-thinking financial institutions of that time.
The building sits at the intersection of Stefanikova Street and V Botanice in the Smichov district. Access is limited to viewing the exterior, as it no longer functions as a bank and is not open to the public.
The building was originally part of a larger urban renewal plan that never came to full completion. An adjacent residential complex shares the same brutalist style, showing what the entire district was meant to become.
