New Town Hall, Gothic town hall in New Town, Prague, Czech Republic
The New Town Hall is a Gothic building on Charles Square with a tall prismatic tower and an observation gallery at the top. The structure includes several wings with Renaissance windows that reflect different construction phases from the 14th to 15th century.
The town hall was founded as part of city expansion starting in 1377 and its tower received its current form between 1451 and 1456. The building is closely linked to the first Prague defenestration of 1419, a turning point in the city.
The building takes its name from the neighborhood expansion of the 14th century and served the council of the local community. Visitors can see different building styles on the facades that show how the town hall grew over the centuries.
The town hall is open Tuesday through Sunday from April to November with access to an observation platform. To reach the gallery, visitors must climb stairs, which is why sturdy footwear is recommended.
The observation platform in the tower was originally a practical tool for city officials to watch for fires and threats. Today it offers a quiet view over the square and surrounding streets.
