Horní Planá is a mountain town in Český Krumlov District, situated at approximately 776 meters above sea level. The municipality spreads across a large area with seven villages and sits near the northern edge of Lipno Reservoir.
The town was first documented in 1332 and received market town status from King Charles IV in 1349. This development marked its rise as a trading center and it became connected to the Český Krumlov estate.
