Diana Funicular, Historic funicular in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic
The Diana Funicular is a cable railway that travels 453 meters uphill, connecting Mariánská Street near Grandhotel Pupp with a lookout tower at the top. The journey includes three stations, with a middle stop dividing the ascent into two sections.
The funicular opened in 1912 and was a technical achievement of that era, showing how spa resorts expanded their infrastructure during the early 20th century. It remains a relic from a time when such facilities became standard to provide guests access to nearby recreational areas.
The funicular links the spa town to forest areas and is used by both visitors and locals as a way to escape the busy center and reach nature.
You can exit at the middle station to explore the forest paths and surrounding nature before continuing your ride. Wear comfortable shoes since the paths around the upper area are uneven and covered with tree roots.
The funicular was designed by a Swiss engineer and was one of the longest of its kind in the region when it opened. This Swiss technical expertise helped ensure the railway was built to function reliably for decades.
