Chapel of the Holy Cross, Baroque chapel in Prague Castle, Czech Republic
The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a baroque chapel located in the second courtyard of Prague Castle, in the Czech Republic. It was designed by court architect Nicolò Pacassi and today serves as the castle administration shop.
The chapel was built between 1758 and 1763 during the reign of Maria Theresa, as part of a broad renovation of Prague Castle. Pacassi led the overall transformation of the castle complex during that period.
Inside, sculptures by Ignaz Franz Platzer line the walls alongside painted scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Platzer was one of the most sought-after sculptors in Bohemia during the 18th century, and his work here gives the space a richness that still catches the eye today.
The chapel is open during regular Prague Castle hours, as it now operates as the castle shop. It sits in the second courtyard, which is easy to reach from the main entrance.
From 1961 to 1990, the chapel was used to house the St. Vitus treasure, a collection of liturgical robes, jewels, and sacred objects normally kept in the cathedral next door. Nothing in the current shop setting hints at that former role.
