St. Nicolas Church in Louny

St. Nicolas Church is a Gothic structure with three naves supported by external buttressing systems that rise to 60 meters in height. The exterior features pyramid-shaped turrets and rounded arches throughout its composition.

A devastating fire in 1517 destroyed the original structure, prompting royal architect Benedikt Rejt to oversee its reconstruction. The new building was completed by 1538 using gaize and slate as primary materials.

The carved main altar by sculptor Jeroným Kohl dominates the interior with three sections and large spiral columns paired with religious paintings. This artistic arrangement shapes how visitors experience the sacred space inside.

The climb to the belfry and gallery involves approximately 180 stairs and rewards visitors with views across the medieval center of Louny. Those planning to ascend should be prepared for the stairs to reach this vantage point.

The church tower houses two bells and remains the only visible remnant of the original medieval structure that stood before the 1517 fire. This heritage element connects the present building to its longer past.
