City walls of Louny

The City walls of Louny form a stone fortification system encircling the town center, with surviving sections of ramparts, towers, and gateways visible throughout. The construction uses local materials and reflects the defensive architecture typical of medieval Bohemia.

The walls were built in the 14th century when the town served as a strategic stronghold in the Bohemian kingdom. Over time, sections have been rebuilt or modified, but the core structure preserves the medieval design and purpose.

You can walk along the preserved sections of the walls at multiple points throughout the town center. The route is generally accessible on foot, and you will find information panels at key locations describing the construction and layout.

The Žatecká Gate is one of the few original gateways still standing and reveals how travelers historically entered the town through a narrow, fortified passage. This particular gate remains one of the region's most intact examples of medieval gate architecture.
