Znojmo Castle

Znojmo Castle is a castle complex in the city of Znojmo with multiple buildings, stone walls, and an octagonal tower overlooking the Granice Valley and Thaya River. The site includes defensive fortifications and other structures that reflect different construction periods.

The castle was built around 1080 by Duke Bretislav I as a wooden structure and later rebuilt in stone during the 12th century after its destruction. This reconstruction allowed the site to become a major defensive position in the region.

The castle houses the Jihomoravské Museum, which displays regional collections and rotating exhibitions showing how South Moravian communities developed over time. Visitors can explore objects that reflect daily life and customs from different eras in this part of the Czech lands.

The Romanesque Rotunda of Saint Catherine on the grounds contains 11th-century frescoes showing biblical scenes and members of the Přemyslid dynasty. These paintings are among the oldest surviving wall decorations from this part of Central Europe.
