Sluice Klecany, zdymadlo na Vltavě
Sluice Klecany is a lock on the Vltava River near Roztoky, south of Prague. The structure features large metal gates operated from a control building on the riverbank, along with an adjacent boat lock that moves vessels over changes in river level.
The sluice was built between 1897 and 1899 as the first structure of the Vltava waterway and opened in 1899. After damage from a flood in 1975, a new modern lock with hydraulic gates was constructed to improve vessel passage.
The name Klecany comes from the surrounding area, which has long been connected to river navigation and local life. Today, visitors can see how the lock remains part of daily activity, as people watch boats pass through and locals pause along the riverbank to enjoy the flowing water and passing vessels.
The best way to see the sluice is to walk along the riverbank, where you can watch the structure and observe boats passing through. The area is accessible and calm, ideal for pausing to understand how this water facility works.
The walls of the control building display marks from over 100 years of flood water levels, a silent record of the region's flood history. These markings let visitors understand the river's power during extraordinary times and trace important events like the major flood of 2002.
