Chuchelský háj, Nature reserve in Prague 5, Czech Republic
Chuchelský háj is a protected forest covering approximately 149 hectares with mixed woodlands of oak and pine trees, limestone outcrops, and varied terrain. The reserve spans across both districts with different woodland types at varying elevations.
The forest was owned by the Cistercian Order from the 13th century until the Hussite Wars changed its status. It later came under the ownership of Prince Friedrich of Oettingen-Wallerstein in 1825.
The name comes from the two surrounding districts, Malá and Velká Chuchle. Locals use the forest as a place to escape the city and spend time in nature with family and friends.
Access the reserve via Pod Akáty street in Velká Chuchle or from the Malá Chuchle crossroads, both served by public transport. A marked educational trail with information panels guides visitors through the forest.
The reserve contains a small forest zoo with native species including lynx, foxes, mouflons, and deer living in naturalistic enclosures. This allows visitors to observe woodland animals up close that are otherwise difficult to spot in the wild.
