Káraný - Hrbáčkovy tůně

Káraný - Hrbáčkovy tůně is a protected area along the Elbe River featuring floodplain forests, wet meadows, ponds, and diverse water habitats spanning around 380 hectares. The landscape displays the typical mix of waterways, woodland, and open ground found in river lowlands.

The area took shape from river regulation work on the Elbe in the early 20th century, which separated old river bends from the main channel. This reshaping of the landscape created the conditions that support the variety of plants and animals you see today.

The area is named after hydrobiologist Jaroslav Hrbáček, whose work revealed the connection between fish populations and aquatic invertebrate communities. Today, visitors walk through landscapes that became important because of his research findings.

Access is through marked trails that connect the municipalities of Káraný, Čelákovice, Lysá nad Labem, and Přerov nad Labem. Spring through autumn is the best time to visit, when paths are passable and wildlife activity is high.

The area protects several preserved river oxbows that host rare plants like marsh pea and aromatic sweetgrass in their native habitat. These cutoff bends are remnants of earlier phases of the river and create specialized living spaces found nowhere else nearby.
