Štvanice, River island in Holešovice, Czech Republic
Štvanice is a narrow river island in the Vltava, located in the Holešovice district of Prague 7, with tennis courts, a skatepark, and open sports grounds along its length. Two bridges link it to both riverbanks, making it accessible from different parts of the city.
The island's name comes from the Czech word for hunting, referring to a tradition of keeping and displaying animals for public entertainment that ended in 1816. After that, the site was gradually transformed into a sports destination over the following decades.
The tennis arena on the island has drawn professional players and spectators since the 1980s, making it a reference point in Prague's sports scene. Alongside tennis, the skateboarding area and open grounds are used daily by locals for leisure.
Access to the island is through stairs or an elevator at Hlávkův Bridge on the city side. The outdoor sports areas are best enjoyed in warmer months, though the covered skate facility stays open throughout the year.
The covered skate bowl on the island can be used year-round, which is not common in Prague where most skateboarding spots are fully outdoors. This draws skaters on rainy or cold days when other spots in the city are unusable.
