Štvanice, River island in Holešovice, Czech Republic
Štvanice is a narrow island in the Vltava River with several sports facilities and recreational spaces spread across its length. Two bridges connect it to the surrounding city and provide access to tennis courts, skateparks, and sports grounds.
The island takes its name from hunting activities that occurred until 1816, when animals were kept and displayed for public entertainment. After this hunting tradition ended, the site gradually transformed into a modern sports venue.
The main tennis arena has hosted major international tournaments since 1986, drawing players and fans from around the world. This sporting tradition shapes how locals and visitors experience the island today.
Enter the island through stairs or an elevator at Hlávkův Bridge on the city side. The outdoor facilities are most enjoyable in warmer months when all sports areas are fully operational.
The island features a covered skate bowl that allows skateboarding year-round, a feature found nowhere else in Prague's skateboarding spaces. This makes it a popular gathering spot for skaters during bad weather.
