Velký Hornek, Nature reserve in Líšeň, Czech Republic
Velký Hornek is a nature reserve in Líšeň featuring steppe and forest-steppe ecosystems with oak woodland patches. The landscape consists of open grasslands mixed with wooded areas that create a diverse natural environment.
The reserve was established in 2004 to protect rare plant and animal species at the northern edge of their natural range. This designation marked an effort to preserve the ecological character of the limestone plateau.
The reserve contains 69 species of bryophytes and 366 species of fungi, making it an essential site for biological research and environmental education.
The reserve is accessible by marked walking trails that start from nearby areas and provide views of surrounding valleys. Visitors walking through open areas can easily observe the natural landscape, though paths may be uneven in places.
The site serves as a refuge for butterfly species like the Clouded Apollo and rare beetles such as the European stag beetle. It represents one of the few places where these sensitive insects can still thrive.
