Tabor Zoo, Zoo in Tábor, Czech Republic
Tabor Zoo is a zoological garden in Tábor, a city in southern Czech Republic, set on a hilly plot of land with animal enclosures spread across the grounds. It is home to a wide range of species, including big cats such as tigers and lions, as well as bears, each kept in purpose-built areas.
The zoo was founded in 1994 as a small collection of animals on the outskirts of Tábor. Over the following decades, new species and enclosures were added, and the facility gradually took on a broader role in animal care and public education.
The zoo sits on a hilly plot at the edge of Tábor, where visitors walk along narrow paths between the enclosures. It is mainly visited by families with children, and on weekends it becomes a common gathering spot for people from the surrounding area.
The grounds are hilly, so comfortable footwear is a good idea, especially after rain when the paths can be slippery. Parking is available right at the entrance, and there is a restaurant on site where visitors can stop for a meal.
The zoo runs breeding programs for several species considered at risk in the wild, working alongside other European zoos as part of coordinated efforts. This means that some animals born here may later be transferred to other facilities or to protected areas as part of wider conservation work.
