Věstonická nádrž, Nature reserve in Dolní Věstonice, Czech Republic.
Věstonická nádrž is a large protected area located where the Thaya, Jihlava, and Svratka rivers meet. The reserve contains multiple habitat types including open water, reed beds, forests, and meadows that support diverse plant and animal life.
The reserve was established in 1994 to protect the landscape at this river confluence where the former village of Mušov once existed. The creation of this protected area marked an important shift toward environmental conservation in the region.
The reservoir takes its name from the nearby village of Dolní Věstonice, reflecting the deep connection between the community and this landscape. Today, visitors come to observe the rich wildlife that congregates along the shores, especially during seasonal migrations.
The area can be accessed from multiple entry points around the reservoir, each with parking and signage explaining the local environment. Spring and autumn offer the best viewing opportunities when migratory birds pass through in large numbers.
The site has held international recognition as an Important Bird Area since 2010, where thousands of migratory birds rest during their seasonal journeys. This status makes it one of central Europe's most valuable stopover points for migrating species.
