Church of Saint Leonard, Romanesque church building in Mušov, Czech Republic
The Church of Saint Leonard is a Romanesque structure with preserved southern walls from its original construction, situated on a small island within the Nové Mlýny reservoir. The building was reconstructed in the Gothic style during the 14th century and received a Baroque tower addition in the 18th century.
The building was constructed in the early 13th century and underwent significant changes across several periods. Gothic reconstruction occurred in the 14th century, followed by the addition of a Baroque tower two centuries later.
The church is the only structure that survived from the village of Mušov, which disappeared beneath the reservoir waters in the 1980s. It stands as a quiet reminder of a community that once lived here.
Reaching the church requires wading through water, particularly during low water levels, since it sits on an isolated island. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear and check water conditions before arriving.
It is the only island church in the Czech Republic and sits amid the Nové Mlýny reservoir. The building remained in place when the original valley was flooded to create the reservoir system.
