Klínovec, Observation tower near Jáchymov, Czech Republic.
Klínovec is a stone observation tower on the 1,244-metre summit of the same name in the Ore Mountains, 4 km from Boží Dar and within the cadastral area of Jáchymov. The tower stands beside a mountain hotel; both have been protected as a cultural monument since 12 May 1992. Its top platform was roofed against the near-constant wind, with a glass roof from 1888.
The first wooden structure was built in 1817 to serve spa visitors from Karlsbad, a place that attracted people seeking health cures. The current stone structure was built between 1883 and 1884 as the Kaiser-Franz-Josephs-Turm and replaced the original wooden construction.
The tower's name recalls Emperor Franz Joseph I: it opened in August 1884 as the Kaiser-Franz-Josephs-Turm. In 1885 the summit drew 6,000 visitors, but only 4,623 climbed the tower, as contemporaries blamed the steep effort and the very narrow staircase. A glass roof has covered the top platform since 1888 because of the wind.
Visitors can reach the tower via marked hiking trails from Jáchymov or by taking the chairlift when it is operating. It is wise to wear comfortable hiking shoes and check the weather before heading out, as conditions can change depending on the season.
The tower's top platform was roofed because of the strong wind that blows almost year-round; from 1888 a glass roof covered it. In 1885, 6,000 people reached the summit but only 4,623 climbed the tower, put down by the physical effort and the very narrow staircase.
