Kopicův statek, Traditional farm in Kacanovy, Czech Republic.
Kopicův statek is a timber-frame farmhouse in Kacanovy, in the foothills of the Jizera Mountains, listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The building has an upper floor and a wooden gallery running along its facade, both features common to the vernacular architecture of this mountain area.
The farm gained local importance when its owner František Jiroš became the first mayor of the Turnov district after the abolition of manorial rule in the 19th century. Later, the sculptor Vojtěch Kopic lived and worked here, spending decades carving reliefs into the surrounding sandstone rocks.
The sandstone reliefs carved into the rocks around the farm show figures from Czech history and legend, and visitors can walk among them along a marked path. The carvings feel like an open-air gallery that grew naturally out of the landscape over many years.
The farmhouse sits along a marked trail that passes through a sandstone valley, and the route is clearly signed throughout. The terrain is uneven in places, so sturdy footwear makes the walk more comfortable.
The last relief carved by Vojtěch Kopic depicts the legendary figure Libuše and was intended as a tribute to the National Theater. He died shortly after finishing it, making it both a final work and an unplanned farewell.
