Prales Jizera, Nature reserve in Hejnice, Czech Republic
Prales Jizera is a protected forest area in Hejnice covering just over 90 hectares with coniferous woodland at elevations reaching above 1000 meters. The reserve displays a mixed forest structure with spruce as the dominant species alongside other vegetation.
This protected area was established on June 21, 1960 by the Czechoslovak Ministry of Education and Culture as one of the oldest reserves in the region. A major storm in 1966 caused significant damage to the forest, prompting a restoration program that replanted the woodland.
The site connects to several marked hiking trails that reflect Czech traditions of mountain exploration and nature appreciation. Visitors experience local customs by following these paths through the forested landscape.
Visitors can reach the reserve by taking a regional train to Hejnice station on line 038, then following the yellow-marked path upward through the forest. Dry weather conditions are advisable for comfortable walking on the woodland trails and exploring the area properly.
The forest here contains trees planted during restoration efforts following a major storm in 1966 that uprooted much of the original woodland. This recovery process has created an interesting mix of older and younger growth, showing how the landscape regenerated over time.
