The reserve was established in 1960 and suffered severe forest damage during the 1980s from air pollution and acid rain. Recovery of the woodland has started gradually since then.
The area maintains strict conservation protocols as part of the first zone of the Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Area management system.

The site contains peat deposits reaching depths of 4 meters that support rare plant species. These boggy areas provide scientists with valuable information about ecological processes and regional biodiversity.
