Izera Dark Sky Park

Izera Dark Sky Park is a protected reserve on the border between Poland and the Czech Republic that spans mountainous terrain. The area was designated specifically to preserve darkness for astronomical observation and features multiple viewing locations throughout its expanse.

The project began in 2009 through cooperation between the Astronomical Institute of the University of Wroclaw and Czech scientific institutions. This cross-border initiative was among the first of its kind in Europe and established a model for protecting night skies.

The place functions as a learning space where visitors discover how artificial light disrupts natural cycles and wildlife behavior. People come here to reconnect with a night sky that city living has made invisible to them.

Bring warm clothing since nights are cool at this elevation and the best viewing period runs from autumn through spring. The access roads to various observation points vary in condition, so checking ahead about specific locations helps plan your visit effectively.

The area offers star visibility roughly 40 times better than in cities and allows even the Andromeda Galaxy to become visible. Such conditions are rare in Europe, making this location exceptional for amateur astronomers seeking unobstructed views.
