Rotunda of Saint Wenceslaus

Rotunda of Saint Wenceslaus, Romanesque religious site in Prague, Czech Republic

The Rotunda of Saint Wenceslaus is an early Romanesque church building with a circular design built from local stone materials. Its compact form and sturdy walls display the construction techniques used by medieval craftsmen in Prague.

The prince built this rotunda around 925 after receiving a sacred relic from a Saxon ruler. The building became a key landmark in early Christian development in Bohemia and was eventually supplemented by larger churches.

The rotunda served as a pilgrimage destination for centuries, drawing visitors who came to honor Saint Wenceslaus at his tomb. The site remains spiritually important today as an early center of Christian worship in Bohemia.

The rotunda can be visited as part of exploring Prague Castle and shows you how medieval buildings were constructed. Wear comfortable shoes since you will walk around the castle grounds to view it and nearby structures.

Excavations around the rotunda uncovered medieval artifacts that reveal details about everyday life in early Prague. These findings show how craft skills and religious practice were intertwined in the city a thousand years ago.
