Jezuitský profesní dům

The Jezuitský profesní dům is a baroque monastery in Malá Strana featuring a symmetrical facade that spans multiple floors. The building displays austere architectural elements typical of religious community houses from this period.

Construction took place between 1676 and 1690 under Italian architect Giovanni Domenico Orsi de Orsini as a residence for high-ranking Jesuit members. The building emerged during a period when the Jesuit order held considerable influence in Prague.

Religious wall paintings fill the interior, including works by Josef Kramolín from 1771 that show theological and educational themes of the Baroque period. These artworks offer a window into what the Jesuits valued and taught during their occupation of the building.

The building currently houses the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University, with conference areas and teaching spaces. Keep in mind that this is an active academic institution, so not all areas may be open to visitors.

Archaeological excavations in 2004 uncovered ceramic tiles from an original Romanesque rotunda dedicated to Saint Wenceslas that predated the current structure. This finding reveals that religious buildings occupied this spot across different centuries.
