Symbolický hřbitov horolezců, Climbing memorial in Hruboskalsko, Czech Republic
The Symbolic Climbers Cemetery is a memorial site in Hruboskalsko where names of deceased mountaineers are engraved on bronze plaques attached to a sandstone wall. The wall, called Nekonečná věž, provides space for these inscriptions and stands as a focal point for remembrance.
The memorial was founded in the 1960s through the initiative of climber Valerián Karoušek, who himself died tragically during an expedition in Peru. The project was created to honor those who lost their lives while climbing.
The memorial holds names of climbers who died during their pursuits and serves as a gathering place for the local climbing community to remember them. The names appear on bronze plaques fixed to the sandstone surface.
The memorial is accessible via a yellow-marked hiking trail that connects Sedmihorky spa springs to Hrubá Skála castle. Wear appropriate footwear as the path crosses rocky terrain.
Each December 24th, a religious service takes place at the site to honor climbers who died in the Czech Paradise region. This yearly ceremony brings together people to remember those lost to mountaineering.
