Strahov Library, Monastic library in Hradčany district, Prague, Czech Republic.
The Strahov Library is a monastic library in the Hradčany district and features two grand reading halls lined with wooden shelves holding thousands of old books and manuscripts. The rooms impress visitors with their ornate decoration and the way light streams through tall windows onto the shelves.
The first hall was built between 1671 and 1674 and was originally dedicated to theological works. A second hall was added later to expand the collection into worldly and scientific subjects.
The ceiling frescoes in both halls were painted by Siard Nosecký and Anton Maulbertsch, representing scientific and theological themes of their periods.
Entry requires purchasing a ticket, and visitors move through the rooms with a guide or following marked routes. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes since you will climb stairs to move between different levels.
The ceiling paintings in the halls depict scenes of science and theology and were created by renowned artists of the 1700s. These artworks are so elaborate that many visitors first look upward to take them all in.
