Planetárium Praha, Astronomical education center in Bubeneč, Prague, Czech Republic
Planetárium Praha is an astronomy center in Bubeneč, Prague, housed in a dome-shaped building designed specifically for sky projection shows. The main hall features a large curved ceiling where stars, planets, and other space objects are projected all around the seated audience.
The planetarium opened in 1960, following a public exhibition of astronomical equipment that showed strong interest from the city's residents. It was the first building of its kind in the former Czechoslovakia and remained the largest in the country for many years.
The building sits inside Stromovka, one of the oldest parks in Prague, so a visit here often turns into a walk through greenery after the show. Families come regularly, and the programs are designed to work for children and adults at the same time.
Seats in the center of the hall give the widest view of the projection, since the dome covers more of your field of vision from there. Shows take place in complete darkness and require looking upward the entire time, so comfortable clothing makes a noticeable difference.
The planetarium still uses an optical projection system from the 1990s alongside its newer digital equipment, and both run during certain shows. This means that on the same evening, a visitor can experience two different generations of sky projection technology working together in the same dome.
