Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Starý Bohumín, church building in Bohumín, Czech Republic
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Starý Bohumín is a Gothic church building and a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It stands on the central square of the town and features stone walls with characteristic Gothic details such as pointed arches, tall windows, and a slender bell tower.
The building originated as a wooden chapel around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. It was replaced by a stone structure in the Gothic style during the 14th century, which then underwent a major restoration between 1910 and 1911 to preserve its historical character.
The church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and became a pilgrimage site in 2004 after a local image was crowned. This event strengthened its role as a place where residents gather for prayer and significant celebrations.
The building is located centrally on the main square of Starý Bohumín and is easily accessible. The surrounding area with historic buildings and small shops makes it convenient to visit the church as part of a walk through the town center.
The stained glass windows create a soft light inside when the sun shines through, casting warmth throughout the interior. The original pipe organ from the late 1800s remains in use today and contributes to the acoustic character of the space.
