Zemská porodnice u Apolináře, Gothic Revival maternity hospital in New Town, Prague, Czech Republic.
Zemská porodnice u Apolináře is a Gothic Revival brick building with six pavilions arranged around a central rectangular courtyard. The structure distributes eleven medical sections across separate areas, following North European architectural principles.
The hospital was designed by Josef Hlávka and opened in 1875, replacing an earlier maternity facility established in 1789 near Saint Apollinaris Church. The new building modernized medical care and represented a major step forward for Prague's healthcare infrastructure in the 19th century.
The Chapel of the Holy Cross on the first floor displays its original furnishings from the early 1900s, including a canopied choir stalls arrangement. Visitors notice the star vaults overhead and the paintings that give the space its character.
The site consists of several separate pavilions that are easy to navigate by following the central courtyard. It is best reached on foot, and the surroundings offer multiple entry points.
Each pavilion can close independently, implementing an early medical isolation system designed long before modern pandemic protocols. This thoughtful layout shows how 19th-century doctors already understood infection control.
