Klášter milosrdných bratří, Kloster in Tschechien
The Klášter milosrdných bratří in Prostějov is an 18th-century religious complex featuring Baroque architecture arranged around a central courtyard with covered arcades. The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk, constructed between 1751 and 1755, serves as the focal point with thick stone walls and ornamental exterior details.
The Brothers of Mercy arrived in Prostějov in 1727 at the invitation of a local noblewoman seeking to honor a healing attributed to Saint John; they purchased an estate in 1733 and began construction of the church in 1751, which was consecrated in 1755. The monastery also operated a hospital with 18 beds, serving the community until the order's departure in 1959 following state takeover in the 1950s.
The monastery's name comes from the Brothers of Mercy, a religious order dedicated to caring for the sick and poor. The site served as a place where monks lived alongside the community, their presence shaping local spiritual and charitable life.
The complex is centrally located in Prostějov and easily accessible on foot; the church and exterior courtyard are open to visitors, though several buildings are currently under restoration. Best visited during daylight hours since parts of the site have limited access and occasional religious services are held.
The monastery was never intended for Prostějov; local nobility had to purchase the land despite resistance from the city council and the parish church. This outsider status forced the monks to schedule their services at different times to avoid conflicts with the main church.
