Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Gothic church building featuring a cruciform layout with a main nave, transept, and two side aisles topped by ribbed vaults. This spatial arrangement creates a vertical emphasis typical of Gothic design.

Construction took place between 1323 and 1334 under Queen Elizabeth Richeza, building upon an earlier foundation from the 10th century. This long span shows how the site started as a small chapel and was later expanded into a major church structure.

The interior features frescoes showing scenes from the life of Saint Norbert and the Virgin Mary, painted by artist Vilém Neuenherz in 1743. These wall paintings shape the visual character of the church space today.

The church is accessible during the day and hosts regular Catholic services, particularly on major religious holidays. Keep in mind that visiting hours and access may vary depending on scheduled religious celebrations.

During 18th-century baroque renovations, the interior was substantially reworked while the outer Gothic structural elements were kept intact. This blend of two different architectural periods makes the building distinct.
