Cihelná brána, Empire-style gate in Vyšehrad, Czech Republic
Cihelná brána is an Empire-style gate featuring three passages: a central carriageway and two pedestrian routes set within the fortification walls. Guard rooms flank these passages on either side of the structure.
The gate was commissioned in 1841 as part of a new traffic connection designed to link the fortification with the city. Prague's governor Karel Chotek initiated this project to improve access to the fortress.
This gate serves as one of the primary entrances to the Vyšehrad fortification complex and shapes the first impression visitors have when approaching this historic site. It connects the modern city with the medieval structures that lie beneath the ground.
The site has a ticket office located at the gate itself and is accessible daily. The area can be reached on foot from the city center, though the approach involves steep sections.
The gate required an S-shaped access road through the fortification to manage the steep terrain of the site. This engineering solution continues to shape how visitors approach the entire complex today.
