Táborská brána, Gate at Vyšehrad fortress, Czech Republic.
Táborská Gate is the entrance structure at Vyšehrad fortress featuring a vaulted passage with stone portals and a guardhouse containing a portcullis control room on the first floor. The passage runs through the fortification wall and demonstrates the defensive engineering of this stronghold.
The gate was built around 1640 and served as a key checkpoint for goods and travelers arriving from southern Bohemia through the towns of Tábor and Benešov. Later in 1931 a separate pedestrian path was added through the rampart next to the original structure to improve access.
The gate displays late Renaissance architectural elements that reflect how Prague's fortress builders worked in the 17th century. These stylistic features remain visible in the stone details and overall shape of the passage today.
The gate is easily reached on foot and forms a natural passage through the fortress walls of the complex. The additional pathway beside the historic structure provides an alternative route if the original passage becomes crowded.
The sandstone blocks framing the gate entrance bear scratches and grooves from soldiers who sharpened their weapons against the stone surface during guard duty. These worn marks show the everyday work of people stationed here across the centuries.
