Soumarské rašeliniště, Educational bog trail in Volary, Czech Republic.
Soumarské Rašeliniště is an educational bog trail in Volary. A 1.5 kilometer path with wooden walkways cuts through wetlands, revealing different mosses and plants that thrive in acidic soil conditions.
The area was used for peat extraction for centuries, reshaping the landscape. This extraction continued until 2000 and shaped how water drains through the land today.
The name Soumarský comes from the surrounding peatland landscape. Informational signs along the route explain how bogs develop in this region and their importance for local wildlife and plant life.
The trail is open from June to October when conditions are most favorable. Parking is available near Soumarský Bridge, and the railway station is close by for easy access.
A two-story observation tower rises approximately nine meters above the ground and provides panoramic views across the entire bog area and toward distant mountains. From this vantage point, the full scale of the landscape becomes truly apparent.
