Volary

Volary is a mountain municipality in Prachatice District located at about 760 meters above sea level with diverse landscapes spread across the area. The town sits near the German border in South Bohemia and provides access to Šumava National Park for nature activities.

The town was founded during the 13th century colonization of the Bohemian Forest and became an important point on the Golden Trail trade route between Passau and Prachatice. This old merchant road shaped the settlement's development and economic importance for centuries.

The northern part of the town shows Alpine-style houses with wooden details, built by early settlers from Bavaria who brought their construction methods with them.

The town offers accommodation options in several hotels and sits close enough to Šumava National Park for day trips into nature. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear since the hilly location and proximity to hiking trails make regular explorations easy to arrange.

The street layout of the town still follows the original path of the Golden Trail, where merchants stopped at numerous inns along the way. This preserved arrangement makes a walk through the streets a journey along an old trading route.
