Retenční nádrž Asuán, stuwmeer in Jinonice, Tsjechië
The Retenční nádrž Asuán is a large retention pond in Jinonice that collects excess rainwater from the surrounding area. The water body is held in place by an earthen dam roughly 10 feet (3 meters) high, with pipes and gates controlling flow.
The pond was created in the 1980s when large residential areas like Stodůlky and Lužiny were being built nearby. Since then it has undergone several renovations, particularly in 2007 and 2020, to add vegetation and remove sediment buildup.
The name references Egypt's Aswan Dam, reflecting its water storage purpose. Visitors can observe how nature has gradually reclaimed the technical infrastructure, with trees, shrubs, and reed beds now framing the water.
A walking path runs along the dam and around the perimeter, ideal for strolling during warm months. The area is flat and easily accessible on foot, though the dam path can become slippery during rainy periods.
During a major cleanup in 2020, more than 6000 cubic meters of sediment were removed from the pond for the first time since its creation. This restoration helped recover water quality and habitat for over 90 plant species.
