Vila Chopin, Residential villa in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic

Vila Chopin, originally Vila Schäffler, stands at the corner of Krále Jiřího, Sadová and Petra Velikého streets in Karlovy Vary's Westend. The two-storey building with basement and raised ground floor has an irregular, roughly rectangular plan. Its south side features a round tower with an octagonal top and pyramidal roof; the east façade includes a niche with a statue of St. Florian and a gable ribbon inscribed "Anno domini 1895". The basement is faced with cyclopean masonry of large irregular stones.

The plot on today's Krále Jiřího street was bought on 24 August 1893 by Ludwig Schäffler, a city councillor who became mayor in 1894. He commissioned the Vienna architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, and their villa was finished in 1895. After 1948 it was nationalised and renamed; since February 2021 it is a residential building owned by the Czech Republic and managed by the Ministry of Defence.

The villa's name changed after 1948, when it was nationalized and renamed Chopin; it had been built for Ludwig Schäffler, a city councillor and from 1894 mayor of Karlovy Vary. A plaque by the garden staircase still carries the building's name, and the gable of the east risalit bears the ribbon inscription "Anno domini 1895".

Vila Chopin stands at the corner of Krále Jiřího, Sadová and Petra Velikého streets in the Westend district, about a kilometre north of the spa colonnade. The main entrance faces Sadová Street on the east side. The building is a private residence owned by the Czech Republic and managed by the Ministry of Defence, so it can only be viewed from the street.

The south facade facing Petra Velikého street carries a round tower with an octagonal upper stage under an octagonal pyramid roof; a small round balcony with wrought-iron railing sits on its first floor. In the east side's central risalit, a niche holds a statue of St. Florian, and the gable bears a ribbon inscribed "Anno domini 1895".
