Park Boženy Němcové, park/forestpark, Karviná - Fryštát, Karviná District, Czech Republic
Park Boženy Němcové is a large green space of about 36 hectares in Fryštát featuring winding paths, mature trees, and a small creek called Mlynka that runs through the middle. The park also contains a lake, a summer house now used as a restaurant, a family tomb, a pavilion, and protected trees including a large European ash and an old plane tree.
The park was established in 1804 following a rebuild of Fryštát Castle in the Empire style, using English garden principles with natural-looking trees and winding paths. Over time it served as an enclosure for deer, housed stables and bathhouses, and hosted hunting events, including one attended by Crown Prince Rudolf in 1877.
The park is named after Czech writer Božena Němcová and serves as a gathering place where locals come to relax and spend time with family. People use the open spaces for walks, picnics, and quiet moments throughout the year, making it central to how residents experience their town.
The park is free to enter and open throughout the year, offering different activities by season from summer family outings to quiet winter walks. Visitors can access a children's playground in Slavic style, a restaurant in the former summer house, a deer enclosure, and well-maintained paths for exploring at their own pace.
The park protects several trees of remarkable age and size, including an old plane tree with an exceptionally thick trunk that stands out among the oldest specimens in the region. In summer, visitors can watch outdoor films at a small open-air theater, a simple way locals enjoy entertainment under the stars with friends and family.
