Camp Thomas, Military training facility in North Columbus, Ohio, United States
Camp Thomas was a military training facility built on land that formerly held the Solomon Beers farm along Delaware Road in Columbus. The grounds contained temporary structures including headquarters, guard rooms, hospital facilities, and tent areas for soldiers arriving for service.
Colonel Henry B. Carrington established Camp Thomas in July 1861 to prepare infantry regiments for service during the American Civil War. The facility became a training hub for numerous battalions throughout the conflict.
The camp grounds served as headquarters for the 18th U.S. Infantry and welcomed numerous battalions throughout the Civil War period.
The site was composed mainly of temporary wooden structures and tents that could be quickly erected or dismantled as needed. Visitors should know that no original structures remain visible at the location today.
The last remaining original building from Camp Thomas stood until the early 1990s before it was demolished. This structure was the only physical remnant that survived more than a century after the war ended.
