Hotel Alex Johnson

The Hotel Alex Johnson is a ten-story building in downtown Rapid City that combines Germanic Tudor design elements with Native American motifs. The structure houses accommodations, restaurants, and various event spaces throughout the property.

The building opened to its first guests in 1928 after railroad executive Alex Johnson commissioned its construction in 1927. The project was a major development effort for the city at that time.

The building displays traditional Sioux patterns and symbols throughout its interior spaces, reflecting the heritage of South Dakota's indigenous communities. Visitors can observe these design elements while walking through the lobbies and corridors.

The hotel sits in downtown with direct access to Main Street Square, restaurants, and shops nearby. Free street parking is available on Sundays after 5 PM.

The top floor houses a restaurant with sweeping views of the Black Hills, where contemporary American cuisine is served. This elevated setting offers a rare perspective of the surrounding landscape.
