Sleepy Hollow Country Club, Country club in Scarborough Historic District, United States
Sleepy Hollow Country Club operates from Woodlea, a mansion with Italian Renaissance Revival architecture and over 140 rooms built from buff-colored brick. The estate spans 338 acres and includes a 27-hole golf course, ten tennis courts, an indoor riding arena, multiple pools, squash courts, and guest rooms.
The original mansion was designed by McKim, Mead & White between 1892 and 1895. In 1910, Frank Vanderlip and William Rockefeller purchased the building and transformed it into a club that started with 600 members.
The club was established by wealthy families seeking a private place for social gatherings and leisure activities. The buildings and grounds reflect how members of the American upper class spent their free time in the early 1900s.
The property sits on a large private estate and is not easily accessible to the general public. Visitors should inquire ahead since entry is limited to members and their guests, and special permission may be required.
The interior features marble fireplaces, coffered ceilings, and carefully balanced floor plans that display the architects' skill. These details were executed with great care when built around 1893 and remain intact today.
