Hempstead County Courthouse
Hempstead County Courthouse, Art Deco courthouse in Hope, United States.
The Hempstead County Courthouse is a five-story masonry building at the corner of 5th and Washington Streets, decorated with geometric patterns and concrete panels featuring inverted chevrons. The facade clearly displays Art Deco style with its characteristic lines and shapes.
The building was constructed in 1939 with support from the Public Works Administration and marked Hope's victory over Washington to become the new county seat. This was a pivotal moment in the town's growth and regional importance.
The entrance panels display relief sculptures representing local industries that shaped the region's economy and identity. These artworks tell the story of trades and manufacturing that defined the community's character.
The building is located at a central street corner and is easy to find and access. Note that court operations moved to another building in 2022, but the location remains open for visitors to admire the architecture.
A copper box containing historical documents has been sealed inside a cornerstone since 1939, placed during the Grand Lodge of Arkansas Masonry ceremony. This hidden capsule still awaits opening and the secrets it holds inside.
