Hempstead County Courthouse
Hempstead County Courthouse, Art Deco courthouse in Hope, United States.
The five-story masonry structure at the corner of 5th and Washington Streets features geometric patterns and concrete panels with inverted chevrons.
Built in 1939 with Public Works Administration funding, the courthouse marked Hope's victory over Washington as the new Hempstead County seat.
The entrance panels display relief sculptures representing local industries including construction, mining, medicine, defense, electricity, farming, and brickmaking.
The courthouse operated as the center of county government until 2022, when operations moved to the renovated Farmers Bank & Trust Building.
A copper box containing historical items remains sealed behind the cornerstone placed during the Grand Lodge of Arkansas Masonry ceremony in 1939.
