Claussen's Bakery, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
Claussen's Bakery is a two-story industrial building completed in 1928 with red brick walls and white stone trim across the front. The structure has three loading doors on its west side, tall windows with diamond-shaped tops, and the bakery's name displayed prominently on the facade.
The building was constructed in 1928 by George Frederick Claussen, whose grandfather had started a bakery business in Charleston. The bakery operated for more than 30 years before closing production in 1963, after which it became an inn and later converted into residential apartments.
The building sits in the Five Points district, one of Columbia's oldest shopping areas, where cafes and shops still line the streets around it. The exposed brick walls and tall ceilings with visible metal framework from the bakery era shape how people experience the space today.
The building sits near the University of South Carolina campus with parking areas accessible from Greene Street and a rail line still visible from its delivery days. Visitors can view the historic facade and explore nearby cafes and shops in the district.
The building was later converted into 29 apartments while preserving unusual details like salvaged metal parts from the original baking machinery as decorative elements throughout the spaces. This 2019 renovation created a rare blend of industrial heritage and modern residential living.
