Pier Bridge, Historic covered footbridge in Sullivan County, US
The Pier Bridge extends across the Sugar River with two spans measuring 106 feet and 121 feet, supported by granite abutments and a central pier.
Built in 1907 for the Boston and Maine Railroad, the Pier Bridge facilitated rail transportation until 1977 when the line ceased operations in Newport.
The bridge represents early 20th-century engineering methods, combining Town-style lattice trusses with Pratt trusses joined by wooden pegging and iron rods.
The structure now serves as part of the Sugar River Trail, allowing visitors to cross the waterway while exploring the former railroad corridor.
The bridge features vertical board siding with a purposeful two-foot ventilation gap between the exterior covering and the roof structure.
