Sam's Diner, Historic diner in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.
Sam's Diner is a restaurant in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, built in the Streamline Moderne style and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The structure is made of a steel frame clad with porcelain enamel panels and stainless steel trim.
The building was made in 1940 by the Kullman Dining Car Company as a prefabricated unit and later ran under several different names. It was moved to its current spot in Kill Devil Hills in 1996.
Sam's Diner reflects the classic American diner experience of the mid-20th century, with counter seats and booth sections still in use today. Eating here feels much the same as it would have for customers decades ago.
The diner sits in Kill Devil Hills near the North Carolina coast and is easy to reach by car. The interior is compact, so visiting during quieter hours makes it easier to find a seat.
Before taking its current name, the diner was known as Millie's Diner and Victory Diner, among others. Prefabricated diners like this one were once common across the eastern United States, but very few survive today.
